Health professionals from outside of Sweden
To be able to work as an healthcare professional in Sweden you need a Swedish medical licence.
Obtaining a licence
To work in healthcare, a Swedish license is required for certain professions. There are currently 22 licensed professions. It is the National Board of Health and Welfare that issues licenses and manages the process for obtaining a Swedish license. How you should proceed to obtain a Swedish license depends on whether you are educated within the EU/EEA or outside. To apply for a job as an health practitioner at Region Uppsala, you must:
- Obtain a Swedish professional license.
- Have good knowledge of the Swedish language.
- Be well acquainted with current health care legislation.
Citizens of Non-EU/EEA Countries needs a work permit
If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA and educated within the EU/EEA, you also need a work permit or the right to work in Sweden. Therefore, we will ask you about the status of your residence permit/work permit. If you are offered a job but lack a residence permit/work permit, the International Office will assist you in applying for a work permit.

Language Proficiency
Regardless of your country of education, you need to have good knowledge of Swedish to work in healthcare. To obtain a Swedish license, if you have been educated abroad, you must demonstrate sufficient language proficiency in Swedish. This applies even if you are a Swedish citizen or a citizen of another Nordic country.
You can demonstrate your language proficiency by meeting one of the following requirements set by the National Board of Health and Welfare:
- A passing grade in Swedish 3 or Swedish as a Second Language 3 from Komvux (adult education at the upper secondary level).
- Swedish at level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
- A course or test that qualifies for university studies.
- Equivalent knowledge in Danish or Norwegian is also accepted by the National Board of Health and Welfare.
For healthcare professions that do not require a license, there are no formal language requirements, except for the protected title of assistant nurse. However, it is important to have good knowledge of Swedish.
