Open Call: Artist Residency Art ‘n Fiber® 2026
Region Uppsala, in partnership with the Quilt Academy of Sweden and Uppsala Municipality, announces an international artist residency for textile artists residing in Europe, outside of Sweden. This unique opportunity is designed to foster individual creativity and encourage international collaboration within the textile and fiber arts community.
Conditions
The residency is open to professional textile/fiber artists, or individuals with a compatible active artistic commitment, living in Europe outside of Sweden. Applicants should work with modern art expressions and primarily with textile-/fiber art techniques, such as:
- Textile surface design (fabric printing, dyeing, shibori)
- Piecing, applique, quilting (patchwork)
- Free embroidery
- Incorporating mixed media
Projects based on commercial garments, the fashion industry, and yarn-based methods (tapestry, weaving, knitting, crochet, trapunto) are excluded. The residency project may continue the artist’s individual practice or serve as a phase in planned or ongoing collaborations with professional fiber/textile artists from the Uppsala region.
Residency Details
Great news: An increase in our fundings for 2026 lengthens the residency stay to three weeks instead of two and have made it possible for separate compensation for the artist talk. The scheduled time is September 22nd – October 13th, 2026. The selected artist will receive a grant of 30 000 SEK to cover the expenses for the stay and the workshop plus a travel allowance of up to 5000 SEK for travel to and from Sweden. A separate agreement and payment on the artist talk will be sorted closer in time to the residency. Please note that expenses for insurance (including healthcare) are not provided and no meals are included.
The place of the residency, the Quilt Academy of Sweden accommodations https://quiltakademin.se is situated in the countryside a short drive to the north of the city of Uppsala. The accommodation covers a spacious studio, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a small bedroom. The distance to the city is approximately 15 km, while the nearest suburb, Storvreta - with groceries, restaurants, and a train station - is 5 km from the residency location. Access to the public transportation is limited, but bicycles are freely available for exploring the surroundings and the residency host offers a car ride upon request.

Additional Elements
- Artist Talk at Uppsala Art Museum: As part of the residency the selected artist will be invited to share their work and artistic experiences by presenting a virtual artist talk (slide show) at Uppsala Art Museum. The selected resident will be informed in advance.
- Workshop: The popularity of workshops given by the earlier residency guests on voluntary basis has motivated as to include the workshop as a regular/mandatory part of the application.
- Assisting Company (Colleague/Partner): An assisting person may accompany the artist if necessary. However, the request should be well-motivated and clearly explained in the application. The final decision is taken by the selection committee; no additional funding is available. A minor complementary fee may be charged for any extra arrangements necessary.
Representatives from Region Uppsala, the Quilt Academy of Sweden and Uppsala Municipality will form the selection committee. Only one artist will be granted the scholarship.
